In his first Wimbledon appearance as a retiree, Roger Federer received a standing ovation on Tuesday. The Swiss entered Center Court and took possession of the ‘Royal Box’ along with Princess Catherine of Wales.
“Ladies and gentlemen, Roger Federer!” announced the ‘speaker’ and the Swiss entered the venue in a beige suit and tie, sitting next to his wife and to the left of the princess, who had arrived earlier to see a small video about the exploits of the Swiss on the London grass.
An endless ovation accompanied Federer’s walk on his favorite track. Then defending champion Elena Rybakina and American Shelby Rogers entered to play.
The first player to reach 20 Grand Slam titles, Federer holds the record for Wimbledon titles, eight (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2012 and 2017).
Novak Djokovic, who is seeking his 24th Grand Slam in London, may also match Federer’s eight Wimbledon trophies.
The 41-year-old Swiss retired permanently from tennis in September, after participating in the Laver Cup, played in London, as Wimbledon.
His last game in the British great was the quarterfinals of 2021, when he lost to the Pole Hubert Hurkacz, in three sets and with a 6-0 in the last set. In 2022 he did not participate because he had not recovered from the physical problems that led him to withdraw.
