Retired spacecraft takes last picture of Mars

NASA InSight’s Mars spacecraft has recorded a new photo from Mars as it prepares to end its mission.

Researchers say this photo is likely the last image the spacecraft was able to record.

According to Independent Turkish’s report, InSight, which has been on Mars for a while, will soon be scrapped.

Mars’ windy and dusty environment causes the solar-powered spacecraft’s panels to become dirty and unable to make sufficient use of light.

That’s why NASA plans to end vehicle operations by the end of this summer.

The operations team posted the InSight photo on Monday, Dec. 19, to the spacecraft’s Twitter account.

SENT TO MARS IN 2018

in sharing “I am very low on energy so this may be the last picture I can send. Don’t feel sorry for me, though. My days here have been both productive and peaceful. If I can keep talking to my team about the mission, I will. But I will leave you soon. Thanks for being with me” statements have been included.

In the photo, which the researchers have elaborated and shared, you can see the dome-shaped seismometer and the Martian landscape covered in stones and dust.

InSight landed on the Red Planet in 2018. Since then, it has led to some extremely important discoveries.

Taking unprecedented measurements of seismic activity and earthquakes on the planet, the spacecraft last recorded the largest-ever known earthquake on Mars a few days ago.

The earthquake, announced by the vehicle in May 2022, is of magnitude 4.2.

Most scientists thought the Red Planet was seismically stationary before InSight began measurements in 2019.
