Community Unites for ‘Seisiún for Susie’ Fundraiser in Ballyconnell

Ballyconnell, Ireland – A vibrant show of community spirit took center stage last Friday at SuperValu, Ballyconnell, as local performers from Comhaltas provided spectacular entertainment during a fundraising event for Dr. Susan Cosnett, a retired GP battling a rare form of Acral Malignant Melanoma. The evening, aptly named ‘Seisiún for Susie,’ drew local figures, including Deputy Brendan Smith and Cllr Aine Smith, to lend their support.

Raising Hope and Funds

The fundraiser is part of an ongoing effort to raise €173,000 needed for Dr. Cosnett’s treatment, specifically for Tumour Infiltrating Lymphocytes (TIL) therapy, which she is scheduled to receive in Holland next week. As the community gathered, the event brought together a mix of heartfelt stories and uplifting performances. Over €3,850 was raised on the night, contributing to a total nearing €154,000.

“This event was incredibly special to us,” said Dr. Cosnett, who was unable to attend due to isolation protocols but stayed in touch with the gathering via phone. “We worked at SuperValu, and this is where many memories were made with our community. The love and support I’ve received have brought me to tears.”

A Musical Showcase

The event featured performances from talented local musicians and highlighted the artistry of Irish singer-songwriter Brendan McCahey, known for winning series three of "The Voice of Ireland." Musical acts from Comhaltas enriched the atmosphere, providing an evening filled with joy and camaraderie. Performers like Karina Charles and Patricia Loughlin also joined in, raising both spirits and funds.

“The music was great, everything was lovely,” Dr. Cosnett recalled fondly while discussing the emotions stirred by seeing children she once cared for, proudly wearing t-shirts with her name on them.

A Lifeline for Treatment

The fight against melanoma has been particularly challenging for Dr. Cosnett, who revealed that she has already transferred the best part of €100,000 to her treatment facility in Amsterdam. “I wouldn’t be able to do this without the help I’m receiving. The community has stepped up in an incredible way. It gives me hope and a chance to pursue a treatment that wasn’t available in Ireland,” she explained.

Though Dr. Cosnett has yet to reach her full target, she remains optimistic, noting, “They are allowing me to pay more of it in November, and I’m confident we can get there.”

With previous treatments proving ineffective, this new opportunity presents a glimmer of hope where none existed last summer when her prognosis looked grim.

Embracing the Future

"I feel like I’m on a life raft, holding on tight," Dr. Cosnett shared her sentiments about managing the uncertainty of her health. “I have to keep my head and take this one step at a time.”

The sheer determination she displays, coupled with the unwavering support from her family and community, encapsulates the essence of resilience that many are drawn to. Dr. Cosnett expressed her gratitude for the unity shown by her community, stating, “They have given my children and my husband hope. We spent the last six months smiling, thinking about this amazing opportunity.”

Join the Cause

For those inspired by Dr. Cosnett’s story and wishing to contribute to her treatment, donations can be made through her GoFundMe page. Every contribution, small or large, can make a significant impact on her journey to recovery.

As the community reflects on the event’s success and Dr. Cosnett’s empowering spirit, it serves as a reminder of the difference collective efforts can make. Such gatherings not only fulfill their initial goals but also create a tapestry of support and love that strengthens community bonds.
