Retired Doctor Resumes Work to Alleviate Doctor Shortage in Champdeniers

Alain Champeil was retired a few days ago. But he has just resumed his work as a doctor. An unexpected reinforcement for the mayor and the medical center who could not find doctors willing to settle down.

Alain Champeil is 75 years old and just a few days ago, he was retired. But he is now the “new” doctor in the town.

The town hall and the doctors at the nursing home tried everything to find a practitioner. In vain. Alain Capelle, the mayor, tried recruitment agencies, but the result was not conclusive, to say the least. “Our only means of recruiting was the recruitment agency, but we’re on the third and nothing, it’s a rat race. In addition, the entry ticket is 12 to 18,000 euros so, I take this opportunity to tell my colleagues to be careful with contracts, because he has 50% bandits.” Alain Capelle, the mayor of Champdeniers, does not mince his words. It must be said that he claims to have already paid 20,000 euros, for nothing.

So the fact that the former town doctor who has been enjoying a well-deserved retirement for nine years agrees to work again is good news.“my motivation is first and foremost local, it is the shortage of doctors in the area, and also the difficulties of the population in finding a treating doctor or having prescriptions renewed.”

Since his retirement, he only looked after his family. From now on, he receives his patients in the medical center. And the two other doctors who work there are quite happy to see reinforcements arriving. “For us, this will allow us to lighten our program a little and better respond to the demand of the population. Our daily life is 60 acts per day”, explains Patrice Savary, general practitioner. He too is angry, but not at the recruitment firms, rather at those who let the situation degenerate. “The problem is that we have known for 15 or 20 years that we were going to lack doctors everywhere in the territory and that the people responsible have not done what was necessary. Faced with this negligence, unfortunately or fortunately, we can count on the sense of duty of retired doctors.”

If the new doctor who has just returned admits to having taken “a facelift”, he also knows that he will not be able to work for many years. And the problem will then arise again, especially since the two other doctors still in practice are close to retirement.
