The winds have dropped and this is facilitating the work of the 290 forest fire fighters, while aerial vehicles will also be raised in order to bring the fire under control.
Nine villages were evacuated while many areas have been left without electricitywith the fire reaching up to the borders with the prefecture of Heraklion, destroying thousands of acres of agricultural and forest land.
The Minister of Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, traveled to Crete and reiterated that the forces will remain at the scene until the fire is completely extinguished. “No one is going to leave if we don’t do our job first,” he said among other things.
As both the minister and the Regional Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnautakis, said, the firefighters have been in the field for two days, with some of them having completed 40 hours of continuous effort until yesterday, so that the battle with the flames could be won and the sweep stopped. of passing through the area.

Fortunately, human lives were not at risk, as settlements, where the majority of residents are mostly elderly, were evacuated in time.
