Retailers sold less in the second quarter of this year, but made more turnover. That is entirely the result of price increases, reports the Central Bureau of Statistics.
In the second quarter, turnover increased by 6 percent compared to the same period last year. In the same months, retail companies sold 4 percent less goods.
Turnover in the food sector even grew by almost 10 percent, while the number of food and beverages sold fell by 3 percent. Specialty food stores in particular sold less (-6.5 percent) than in the same period last year.
In the non-food sector, the volume of sales fell slightly more (-4.6 percent) and turnover increased by 3 percent. Do-it-yourself shops, shops selling consumer electronics and white goods and clothing shops in particular had a hard time. They sold about 8 percent less stuff.
Fewer retail bankruptcies
There were also fewer bankruptcies in the retail sector than in the previous two quarters. Last quarter, 59 retailers went bankrupt, up from 86 in the previous quarter and 64 in the previous quarter.
The total number of bankruptcies did increase, however: from 728 in the first quarter to 797 in the second. Of all bankruptcies in the second quarter, 7 percent were in the retail sector. In the first three months this was still 12 percent.
On Wednesday it was announced that the Dutch economy contracted by 0.3 percent in the second quarter compared to the previous quarter. Because a small contraction was also recorded in the first quarter, there is officially a recession.
