Retail sales grew 0.1% in August, reports Inegi

Mexico City. Retail sales in Mexico, the main indicator of family consumption activity, reported a marginal advance of 0.1 percent monthly during the eighth month of the year, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

Trade in Mexico grew at a lower rate compared to July, when it advanced 0.7 percent monthly, but they had two positive months, after their monthly setback in June, although it maintained its contraction compared to the same month last year.

According to the Indicators of Commercial Companies (Emec), which calculates the Inegi, real income from retail sales reported a growth of 0.1 percent in August compared to the previous month; Meanwhile, in its comparison with the eighth month of 2023, sales suffered a contraction of 0.8 percent, the third consecutive.

Within the annual figures, the increase in sales through the internet and printed catalogs stands out by 8.1 percent, while sales of groceries, food and beverages grew by 7.1 percent. What counteracted the advance were sales of hardware, hardware and glass items, with a drop of 6.3 percent; Self-service and department stores show a contraction of 2.1 percent, while the sale of stationery items 2.2 percent.

With original figures, retail sales contracted 0.8 percent annually from 3.9 percent in the previous month, accumulating two downward readings.

In the reference month and at an annual rate, real income from the supply of goods and services fell 8 percent. Real income from the supply of goods and services of wholesale commercial companies grew 0.9 percent, while with original figures it fell 8.7 percent.

For its part, in August 2024 and with seasonally adjusted data, real total income from the supply of goods and services, from non-financial private services, rebounded 0.7 percent monthly, after having decreased 0.5 percent in July.

With figures adjusted for seasonality and at an annual rate, the aggregate index of real total income from the supply of goods and services increased 4.5 percent in August.
