resumption of sports training authorized from May 11

Berne, 04.29.2020 – The Federal Council is easing the measures against the spread of the coronavirus in the field of sport. Training will be possible again from May 11, 2020, subject to compliance with the protection and hygiene regulations. This applies to popular sport and competitive sport, individual or team. The Federal Council made this decision at its meeting on April 29.

Physical and sports activities are an important leisure activity for many people in Switzerland. Almost 80% of the population over the age of fifteen participate in sport on a regular basis. More than two million people are active in sports associations and around 100,000 work places depend directly or indirectly on this sector. As these activities contribute significantly to the physical and mental health of the population, the Federal Council considers it vital to allow them to resume quickly, with as few restrictions as possible. His decision concerns both people who practice popular sport and elite athletes who earn their living entirely or partially through sport.

Drives re-authorized

The planned relaxation plan applies from May 11 and is subject to clear guidelines. Regarding popular sport, training and other activities can resume in all types of sport, provided that the following instructions are observed: the activity can only take place in a small group of no more than five people, without contact physical and respecting the rules of hygiene and distance.

For competitive sports, the restrictions are less restrictive. Training of more than five people is thus authorized. This concerns, for example, athletes active at national level or members of a team which participates widely in professional competitions. Explicit protective measures including strict hygiene rules should reduce the risk of transmission.

Protection and hygiene measures of sports federations

In principle, flexibility is only allowed if the sports federation concerned has enacted detailed protection measures. These specify in particular how the sport can be practiced while keeping the risk of contamination at a low level. The guidelines drawn up by the Federal Office of Sport and the Federal Office of Public Health in collaboration with the municipalities, the cantons, Swiss Olympic and representatives of sports leagues provide assistance in fixing them. In case of questions, regional associations and clubs can contact their umbrella organizations.

Competitions scheduled from June 8

Sports competitions are still not permitted at this time. The Federal Council however plans to authorize them, without an audience, from June 8, 2020 for the largely professional leagues. The decision will probably be made on May 27, taking into account the development of the pandemic.
