Resumption of Diplomatic Relations Between Saudi Arabia and Iran

Ambassador (Ambassador) of Saudi Arabia to Iran arrived in the Islamic republic on Tuesday (5/9). Likewise with the Iranian Ambassador to Saudi who landed in Riyadh, Saudi on the same day. This comes as relations between the two Gulf nations recover after a seven-year break.

Shiite-dominated Iran and Arab Saudi the Sunni Muslims, agreed to resume diplomatic relations and reopen their respective embassies, following a mediated agreement Chinawhich was announced in March.

Riyadh and Tehran severed ties in 2016 after the Saudi diplomatic mission in Iran was attacked during protests over the Saudi authorities’ execution of Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr.

Reported by the news agency AFPWednesday (6/9/2023), the leadership of Saudi Arabia recognized “the importance of strengthening relations, increasing engagement… and taking (the relationship) to a wider horizon,” said Saudi Ambassador Abdullah Alanazi upon his arrival in Tehran to carry out his duties, according to a Saudi Foreign Ministry statement.

Also on Tuesday, Iran’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Alireza Enayati, arrived in the capital Riyadh, where she was received by Saudi Foreign Ministry officials and embassy staff, according to Iran’s official news agency, IRNA.

Alanazi is a former Saudi Arabian ambassador to Oman, while Enyati was previously Iran’s envoy to Kuwait.
