Keith Bennett was only 12 when he was tortured and killed by Ian Brady and Myra Hindley in 1964. His body was never found, but now the police have started digging in the area after a skull was discovered.
It was a group of experts who discovered the skull on Saddleworth Moor in the north-west of England. The case was discussed by several international media, including the UK Independent And BBC news.
Forensic anthropologists have already examined body tissue samples found in the area.
The police started looking for the missing boy yesterday, but were forced to stop at around 4.45pm due to bad weather. A tarp was placed on the area where the carabinieri operated and searches will resume today.
He was tortured
Bennett was on his way to his grandmother when he was lured into a car by Hindley on June 16, 1964.
Brady and Hindley killed a total of five children between 1962 and 1965. Bennett is the only one of the five murder victims who has not yet been found.
The year after the last murder, both Brady and Hindley were jailed for life. Police discovered they robbed and sexually tortured the victims before burying them on Saddleworth Moor in the Pennines, a mountain range in England.
Attempted fire by dad
The five killed are Pauline Reade (16), John Kilbride (12), Keith Bennett (12), Lesley Ann Downey (10) and Edward Evans (17).
It will solve the mystery
It was Hindley’s sister’s partner who called and alerted the police, after helping the couple bury the body of the latest murder victim.
The discovery of the skull came after author Russel Edwards assembled a team of experts to try to solve the mystery.
