For the first time, regional and departmental elections (formerly called cantonal elections) are being held at the same time. The first round takes place on June 20; the second round, June 27.
They were originally scheduled to be held in March 2021, but were delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Voters vote for a list of candidates running across the region. If a list obtains an absolute majority of the votes in the first round, it obtains 25% of the seats. The other seats are shared, proportionally, between all the lists which obtained more than 5% of the votes.
If a second round is necessary, only the lists having obtained more than 10% of the votes can be maintained. The top list obtains 25% of the seats. The other seats are shared, proportionally, between all the lists which obtained more than 5% of the votes.
The regional council thus constituted votes to designate, from among its members, the president of this regional executive. The term of office is six years.
In Corsica, Guyana and Martinique, these are territorial elections.
Mayotte, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Saint-Barthélemy, Saint-Martin, Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon and Wallis-et-Futuna are not affected by the 2021 regions.
–
Voters vote for a woman-man pair that runs at the canton level (there are around 2,000). This is a two-round majority ballot. If no pair obtains an absolute majority with a number of votes greater than 25% of those registered, a second round is organized. Only pairs having obtained at least 12.5% of the votes of registered voters can be maintained. It is the pair that came first and sits on the departmental council. They are elected for six years.
The departmental council thus constituted votes to designate, among its members, the president or the president of this regional executive.
There are no departmental elections in Paris, in the communes of the metropolis of Greater Lyon, nor in Corsica, Guyana, Martinique, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Martin, Saint Pierre and Miquelon and Wallis and Futuna.
