Today, Sunday, the Supreme Islamic Sharia Council in Lebanon announced the results of the elections, as they were relatively expected, in Beirut and other governorates.
In practice, the results showed that the coalition of Sunni political forces, led by the Future Movement, won most of the seats whose candidates were supported, which numbered 24 elected seats, in addition to eight seats whose members were named by the Mufti (see Al-Modon).
Although these elections assigned a room in the corner of what many describe as the Sunni political vacuum in Lebanon, the membership of this council appears to be a matter of honor for its owners. However, the eyes of the Sunni community, especially after the competition witnessed in some regions, are turning to how the new council will manage its roles and tasks.
After the ballot boxes opened on Sunday morning, the Mufti of the Lebanese Republic, Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian, ratified the results of the elections for the Supreme Islamic Sharia Council, on Sunday afternoon. The results were as follows:
Regarding the Beirut Governorate, eight won for the seats allocated to them, and they are: Governor of Mount Lebanon, Judge Muhammad Makkawi, Wassim Al-Mughrabel, Ziad Al-Sahib, Abdel Hamid Al-Taqi, Mazen Sharbaji, Civil Judge Talal Baydoun, Abdullah Shaheen, and Fouad Zarad. It is noteworthy that most of these were on the list supported by the Future Movement, along with MP Fouad Makhzoumi and the Islamic Group, in addition to the Union of Beirut Associations and Families.
Representing Tripoli and its suburbs, Fayez Mustafa Saif, Bilal Baraka, Ahmed Abdel Amin, Mazhar Al-Hamwi, Osama Trad, Munther Hamza and Wael Zimrli won. Most of them were on the “Trust and Development” list, supported by the Future Movement and MPs Faisal Karami, Ahmed Al-Khair, Jihad Al-Samad, and the National Moderation Bloc. However, in exchange for the independent candidates, Al-Hamawi and Zimmerli, violating the list of this alliance. 125 voters out of 134 participated in the Tripoli elections. The candidate Kifah Al-Kassar also won for the Akkar Governorate seat, with a result of 81 votes.
For Mount Lebanon Governorate, Raif Abdullah and Hamza Sharaf El-Din won. The number of voters reached 107 out of 122.
For the Bekaa Governorate, Muhammad Al-Ajmi and Younis Abdel-Razzaq won, with 99 voters out of 111 voting.
Regarding Sidon district, Abdel Halim Al-Zein and Fayez Baasiri, who are supported by the Future Movement, and Muwafaq Al-Rawas, who are supported by the Islamic Group, won by acclamation.
Nazih Hamad won by acclamation from the Hasbaya and Marjayoun districts.
Statements and positions
Before noon today, after he cast his vote at the Fatwa House in Beirut, Mufti Derian said: “These elections that took place in all the Lebanese governorates are confirmation that we have been and will remain committed to the regulations and laws out of our keenness to advance our institutions, which are an integral part of the public order.” to the Lebanese state.
Among the former prime ministers, Tammam Salam came to Dar Al-Fatwa to cast his vote, and said: “We pray for success for everyone, they are all brothers, they are all loved ones, and competition in this field is required and legitimate, and this entitlement enriches itself, and it, along with other entitlements, is a guarantee for us in managing… Our institutions and keeping up with them, foremost of which is the Fatwa House, and what brings good to the Sunni community in particular, and to Muslims in general in Lebanon.”
After casting his vote, Representative Fouad Makhzoumi said: “Today is a very important day… and our goal should all be to support Dar Al-Fatwa, Dar Al-Fatwa, meaning His Eminence the Mufti, and the management of the Dar, because if we all have our competencies and abilities, we can help the Dar and help our people. I I hope that everyone will try to reach the stage of searching for the energies in the sect to develop them. We need to develop Islamic endowments, and we need to support our social institutions, and support our people, whether in the field of health or education, etc. I hope that this will be an opportunity to hold hands and move forward because the people They couldn’t wait anymore…”
From Tripoli, after casting his vote, Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi said: “The Supreme Islamic Council has a major role in protecting endowment properties and the rights of citizens and adhering to national matters that lead to the unity of Lebanon with its legal and judicial committees.”
Meanwhile, Representative Ashraf Rifi said: “Our vote is for whoever we consider to be the best and for whoever can represent Tripoli and all the surrounding areas, Minya, Dinniyeh and Koura. Therefore, we did not accept imposing names, pre-packaged lists, and quotas on a quality electoral body. Therefore, we demanded that matters be left to a quality, educated electorate body. “You deserve to choose the best.”
In reality, the weight of the elections for the Sharia Council was concentrated in Beirut and Tripoli (with its suburbs), where the largest number of membership seats were, and where the battle waged by the Sunni political forces was concentrated.
It is noteworthy that the scope of the work of the Sharia Council is very broad, starting with endowments, the Sharia court, and various religious affairs, in addition to its mission of carrying regional projects in this framework to the Fatwa House in Beirut.
