Results of the regional and departmental elections of 2021

For the first time, regional and departmental elections (formerly called cantonal elections) were organized simultaneously. The first round took place on June 20; the second round, June 27th.

They were originally scheduled for March 2021, but had been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Voters vote for a list of candidates running regionally. If a list gets an absolute majority of votes in the first round, it gets 25% of the seats. The other seats are divided, proportionally, among all the lists that obtained more than 5% of the votes.

If a second round is necessary, only the lists that have obtained more than 10% of the votes can be maintained. The first list gets 25% of the seats. The other seats are divided, proportionally, among all the lists that obtained more than 5% of the votes.

The regional council thus constituted votes to appoint, from among its members, the president of this regional executive. The term of office is six years.

In Corsica, Guyana and Martinique these are territorial elections.

Mayotte, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Saint-Barthélemy, Saint-Martin, Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon and Wallis-et-Futuna are not affected by the regional 2021.

Voters vote for a woman-man couple who will present themselves at the cantonal level (there are about 2,000). It is a two-round majority vote. If no couple obtains an absolute majority with a number of votes higher than 25% of the members, a second round takes place. Only couples who have obtained at least 12.5% of the votes of the registered voters can support themselves. It is the couple who arrived first who sits on the departmental council. They are elected for six years.

The departmental council thus constituted votes to designate, from among its members, the president or president of this regional executive.

There are no departmental elections in Paris, in the municipalities of the Greater Lyon metropolis, nor in Corsica, Guyana, Martinique, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Saint-Barthélemy, Saint-Martin, Saint-Pierre- and Miquelon and Wallis and Futuna.
