For the 14th time, the New York Road Runners held the NYC Half on March 17, 2019.
The New York City Half Marathon is one of the largest half marathon events in the United States. There were over 25,000 who walked through the New York borough of Manhattan this year.
Attractive route
A large part of the route led through Central Park, but Times Square was also the scene of the half marathon before the finish line at Battery Park.
World class times in recent years
By the way, around half of the participants were female – a not unusually high proportion of women in the USA. The elite field was also well filled. After all, the organizers did everything they could to finally run for a time under an hour again. The Kenyan Peter Kirui last achieved this in 2012 with 59:39 minutes. The course record of running legend Haile Gebrselassie is now twelve years old. The Ethiopian ran 59:24 minutes in the 2nd edition in 2007. In the women’s category, local hero Molly Huddle only set a record at the NYC Half three years ago with 67:41 minutes.
World record holder at the start
Since with Joyciline Jepkosgei even the reigning half marathon world record holder started the New York Half Marathon, the hopes for a world class time for the women were of course high. Jepkosgei took the half marathon as a test run for her marathon debut in Hamburg at the end of April. Other favorites were Mare Ngugi (Kenya) and Buze Diriba (Ethiopia).
Weather prevents top times
But the difficult conditions made a record hunt impossible beforehand. Top favorite Jepkosgei achieved a time of 1:10:07 hours to secure victory ahead of Mary Ngugi (Kenya) and Buze Diriba (Ethiopia). With Belay Tilahun there was a winner from Ethiopia in the men’s race. After 1:02:16 hours he had six seconds ahead of Daniel Mesfun from Eritrea. The only US podium was achieved by Paul Chelimo in 3rd place.
