50,000 marathon runners created a sporting state of emergency in New York today.
As every year, in 2018 the New York City Marathon was the world’s last major marathon of the year. With around 50,000 marathon starters, New York also consolidated its position as the world’s largest marathon.
Fast times not possible in 2018 either
In terms of quality, however, the marathon in the metropolis cannot keep up with Berlin, Paris & Co. due to its route. The course record for the men is 2:05:06 hours, which is way above the world record. Also this year the race was well filled, but far from the absolute world class times.
Top-class starting field
The starting field was impressive, after all, there was prize money of 100,000 US dollars for the winners. Of course, the defending champions from 2017, Geoffrey Kamworor (Kenya) and Shalane Flanagan (USA) also competed. The fastest runner on the entry list, however, was Marathon Vice World Champion Tamirat Tola. Because the Ethiopian took 3rd place in the Dubai Marathon in January with a world-class time of 2:04:06 hours. Another hot topic was Lelisa Desisa, who won the Boston Marathon twice (2013 and 2015) and was on the podium three times in New York.
And for Desisa it should finally work out with victory in 2018. After 2:05:59 hours he prevailed wafer-thinly against his team-mate Shura Kitata. Defending champion Kamworor finished in 3rd place, 27 seconds behind.
A duel expected – but a solo victory
In the women’s category, of course, last year’s sensational winner, Shalane Flanagan, was a blatant outsider. Because with Mary Keitany and Vivian Cheruiyot (both Kenya) there were two world-class runners at the start. Keitany holds the Africa record with 2:17:01 hours. Cheruiyot prevailed against Keitany in the spring with a personal best of 2: 18.31 hours in the London Marathon. In addition, she won the Frankfurt Marathon last autumn.

Cheruiyot was unable to continue her successful run in New York. Because Keitany was too strong that day. After 2:22:48 hours she had more than three minutes ahead of Cheruiyot, who just managed to save second place ahead of last year’s winner Shalane Flanagan.
The 2019 New York Marathon takes place on November 3rd.
