The Brazilian National Team defeated Colombia 1-0 in the final of the 2022 Copa América Femenina, and was once again champion of the most important national team tournament on the continent at the women’s level, obtaining its eighth crown. In a game that was quite even, in which the coffee makers had a very good presentation, but due to a mistake in defense and poor definition, they ended up falling against the Cup favorites.
The commitment began with a good offensive proposal, especially from the Colombians who managed to advance with the ball at their feet, thanks to the imbalance proposed by Leicy Santos and Linda Caicedo. While the Brazilians held up well in defense and tried to play collectively.
At minute 8, the visit had to make the first change due to injury, Angelina Alonso left and María Francelino entered. With the passing of the minutes, the green yellow that she dressed in blue and white, was reaching Catalina Pérez’s goal with some danger, but the defense was well positioned.
The game entered a back and forth in which Colombia took advantage of both sides and Brazil looked for it more in the left sector. Around 20 minutes, the tricolor had the first clear opportunity with a free kick shot by Catalina Usme, in which goalkeeper Lorena Da Silva had to force herself to send her to the corner. In that corner kick, Manuela Vanegas headed the first shot of the night.
The coffee makers were more versatile in the attacks, disturbing those led by Pia Sundhage with shots from Catalina, Leicy, Vanegas and Daniela Montoya. Then the rival responded with an Adriana Leal shot, which passed very close to Pérez’s vertical.
At minute 36, Brazil put together a good collective sequence, entered the rival area, Vanegas knocked down Débora De Oliveira inside the area and the central judge María Fortunato decreed the penalty. The same affected stood in front of the ball, executed to the left post, Catalina chose the right and scored the partial 0-1.
For the second half, the Brazilians were the ones that kept the pressure high, having options on the sides and with shots from medium distance. At minute 54, they managed to recover the ball in their own field, they advanced quickly down the left flank, De Oliveira beat the defenders in speed, finished off and the goalkeeper was able to reject the shot.
Seconds later, Colombia made the first substitution, Diana Ospina came in for Mayra Ramírez, trying to find more control of the ball in the middle of the field, to supply the forwards in the attacking front. Then Brazil did the same, but looking to refresh their team, Gabrielle Portilho and Luana Bertolucci entered, Ariadina Alves and Kerolin Israel withdrew.
The Colombians gradually got closer, but they lacked more fluidity in the final meters, looking for it with Linda, Usme and Leicy; the most important was a shot by Linda Caicedo, which went slightly over goalkeeper Da Silva’s horizontal.
About the final minutes, those led by coach Nelson Abadía were quite insistent in the attack, but without luck to tie the score. With this final result of the Copa América Femenina 2022, Brazil got its eighth title and Colombia added its third runner-up. The next tournament will be held in two years, in a venue yet to be defined.
