Tuesday, October 1st, 2024

Prof. Dr. Gunnar Cario is the new clinic director

At the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH), Kiel Campus, pediatric and adolescent medicine has been restructured. In addition, management positions have been filled.

Prof. Dr. Gunnar Cario has been director of the newly founded clinic for pediatric oncology and rheumatology, Kiel campus, since October 1st. He also temporarily heads the new clinic for neonatology, pediatric pulmonology and neuropediatrics. The previously existing clinics for pediatric and adolescent medicine I and II were closed. Prof. Dr. Martin Schrappe, former long-time director of the Clinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine I, has retired. PD Dr. Andreas van Baalen, who temporarily headed the Clinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine II, continues to be responsible for pediatric neurology.

Prof. Cario studied human medicine at the Hanover Medical School. There he received his doctorate in 2000 and worked as a training assistant to become a specialist in pediatric and adolescent medicine. In 2008 he became a specialist in pediatric and adolescent medicine and in 2011 he became a specialist in pediatric hematology and oncology. In 2005 he moved to the children’s clinics of the UKSH, Kiel Campus, as a research assistant, where, after completing his habilitation, he worked as a senior physician and later as a senior physician and deputy clinic director. In 2020, Prof. Cario took up the professorship for clinical studies in pediatric oncology and two years later took over the management of the section for pediatric oncology and hematology.

The aim of his scientific activities is to continually improve therapy for children and adolescents suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common cancer in children and adolescents. Prof. Cario is head of the German ALL-BFM study group and study director of the international AIEOP-BFM-ALL study consortium. Since 2022, he has been one of the project leaders in the CATCH-ALL clinical research group, whose focus is on joint cross-age research into ALL by adult and pediatric oncologists.

In addition to expanding these activities, Prof. Cario strives for the continuous development of the nationally and internationally visible pediatric oncology focus, the expansion of pediatric rheumatology and immunology and at the same time the strengthening of all clinical areas of the clinic he leads.
