Status: 03/21/2023 12:21 p.m

Also on Tuesday there are clear restrictions for the people in NRW, among other things in local public transport. Verdi has extended the warning strikes. An overview of the strike events.

On Tuesday, even more people in North Rhine-Westphalia are affected by the consequences of the public sector warning strike than on Monday. Verdi has extended the strike to cities in the Ruhr area and Westphalia. There will be significant restrictions throughout the state, the union said in advance.

in Gelsenkirchen, Moenchengladbach and Cologne there are big rallies. Verdi and the police estimate that around 9,000 people will demonstrate in Mönchengladbach at lunchtime. In Cologne, a Verdi representative is already talking about “more than 10,000 people” – not all demo trains have arrived at the Heumarkt. Verdi boss Frank Werneke will also give a speech there. In Gelsenkirchen, the police speak of up to 18,500 participants.

In Aachen, among other places, parents have expressed their displeasure at the closure of facilities. They are demanding financial relief from the city because of the warning strikes in daycare centers and open all-day schools. Unpaid salaries to striking educators should benefit parents so that they can at least partially finance alternative care or their loss of salary.

Another demand: The city of Aachen should set up emergency groups or leave daycare rooms open so that parents can set up emergency groups there themselves.

Background of the warning strikes – the wage conflict

Verdi wants to fight for 10.5 percent more wages for employees in the public sector. For the Verdi district of Ruhr-West, managing director Henrike Eickholt says that “citizens, especially parents, should understand this call for a warning strike”. The present offer from the public employers “unfortunately does not allow any other answer, because it is disrespectful and fuels the collective bargaining conflict”. The dissatisfaction of the employees is enormous, the willingness to go on strike is increasing “from day to day”.
