For the construction of the new electronic signal box in Rot am See, Westfrankenbahn is dismantling the existing mechanical signal boxes in Rot am See and Blaufelden. Originally, the dismantling should have already taken place. Due to delays in the planning process and a lack of skilled workers at the executing construction companies, Westfrankenbahn has adjusted the schedule for the work.
Resources are scarce, especially for the planning and acceptance auditors required for the decommissioning of the old interlockings. The decommissioning of the existing signal boxes is now planned for the timetable change on December 9, 2023. This leads to restrictions in the timetable.
In the period from July 29 to September 10, 2023, trains will run regularly from Monday to Friday from around 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from around 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. In the outskirts of the day, buses replace the train journeys on the Lauda–Crailsheim section. The use of buses with bicycle trailers is currently being examined.
From September 11, 2023, trains will again run regularly all day Monday to Friday. On the weekends, the restrictions will probably last until December 9th: Train traffic will then continue to operate from around 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and buses will replace train journeys at off-peak times.
Denis Kollai, Head of Infrastructure Westfrankenbahn: “We very much regret the restrictions on the Tauberbahn. Westfrankenbahn is doing everything to keep the impact on passengers as low as possible. A special thanks goes to the employees, who are doing a great job to maintain train traffic. With the current replacement program, we can offer a reliable timetable. The many excursion guests who travel the route during the summer holidays continue to benefit from our full range of trains during the day.”
Thanks to an investment program coordinated with the state of Baden-Württemberg, the Tauberbahn will benefit from extensive modernization over the next few years. The Westfrankenbahn is renovating the rail infrastructure on the southern section of the Tauberbahn (Bad Mergentheim-Satteldorf). To this end, Westfrankenbahn is making all stations barrier-free, renovating all level crossings and installing a new electronic signal box (ESTW) in Rot am See. With these extensive measures, the stops along the route can be operated more flexibly and more comfortably for passengers. The use of modern interlocking technology has a positive effect on quality.
Information on travel connections
The Westfrankenbahn expressly apologizes to all passengers for the restrictions. Instructions for passengers are stored in the electronic timetable information on bahn.de and in the DB Navigator and DB route agent apps. The positions of the replacement stops can be found under www.westfrankenbahn.de/fahrplan/sev-haltestellen.
