Restrictions on Cars with Russian License Plates in EU: Latest Updates and Information

The decision will take effect from Saturday.

The exception will only apply to citizens of the European Union (EU) permanently residing in Russia and their family members.

Cars with Russian license plates already in Finland will have to leave the country within six months – until March 16, 2024.

What will happen to the cars that will be in Finland after this date is not specified yet.

It has already been announced that from Tuesday at 18 persons with vehicles registered in Russia were prohibited from entering the EU through the Latvian-Russian and Latvian-Belarusian border crossing points.

Lithuania also announced on Tuesday that cars with Russian license plates will no longer be allowed into the country through border checkpoints, while in Estonia a corresponding ban came into effect on Wednesday at 10.

On September 8, the European Commission published explanations on the import and import of goods from Russia. They state that the importation of personal cars and personal belongings is prohibited. Later, the European Commission announced that this list was advisory in nature and EU countries had to decide individually whether to impose bans.
