Currently, the liquid limit is 100 milliliters
Restrictions on carrying liquids and laptops through security at British airports will be eased from June 2024, PA Media and DPA reported, citing the UK government.
Passengers at most of Britain’s major airports will be able to carry liquids in containers of up to two liters in their bags, in the biggest easing of restrictions in decades, BTA reports. The limit is currently 100 millilitres. In addition, passengers will no longer need to carry containers in clear plastic bags or remove tablets and laptops from hand luggage at checkpoints. The Department of Transportation said major airports will need to introduce new technology that will allow security officers to see more detailed images of the contents of travellers’ bags. Legislation for the new rules will be presented today by the Department for Transport to the UK Parliament.
The current airport security rules were introduced in 2006 after a foiled terrorist plan to blow up planes departing from London bound for the United States with homemade liquid bombs, BTA recalls. Violation of these rules by passengers is one of the most common causes of delays in airport security checks.
“By 2024, major UK airports will have the latest security technology installed, reducing queue times, improving passenger service and most importantly making it easier to detect potential threats,” said UK Transport Secretary Mark Harper. “Of course, this won’t happen immediately: it will take two years to be fully implemented. Until then, passengers should continue to follow the current rules,” he added.
