A historic site
The first version of the main bridge which spanned the moat and led to the castle of Volkrange dates from the 13th century. The one in place is much more recent. But it is very damaged. It will be completely rebuilt in oak. Work should start in early August. A metal structure will support the work, “to maintain the stone vault”, specifies the deputy director of the technical services of the city of Thionville, Xavier Chaput. The works must not modify the building.
This “drawbridge” is 2.5 meters wide by 2.3 meters long. Once restored, it will consist of a load-bearing beam, new decking and 1.20 meter high guardrails. The two other footbridges, added to the banks by notables in the 19th century, will be dismantled.
The Buildings of France and the Regional Direction of the cultural affairs (Drac) impose the technique and the materials. This site is entrusted to an authorized company, Chanzy Pardoux, specialized in the restoration of classified sites.
A long-term project
Access to the drawbridge of the old castle of Volkrange has been prohibited for two years. The footbridges on the sides have been impassable for even longer. The vegetation has regained its rights. This project, carried out on a building listed as a Historic Monument, had to bring together the agreement of several parties before being validated, budgeted and planned. The project dragged on because it was repeatedly challenged according to the technical services.
The main bridge will finally be rebuilt identically, but the footbridges will not be replaced. At least initially. A reflection is underway with the Drac to create a discovery trail, pedestrian and educational, around the castle.
