In Enschede, acting mayor Theo Bovens announced an emergency order for the city center at half past eight in the evening, where groups of young people had gathered to set off fireworks. The ordinance applies until 7 a.m. Monday morning and makes it easier to make arrests. After the Mobile Unit charged and the police asked people to leave, calm returned.
Fireworks were also set off around SC Cambuur’s Eredivisie match against FC Utrecht in Leeuwarden, first outside the stadium, but later also on the field when fans entered the stadium. Spectators are not welcome at matches since the tightening of the corona measures. The match had to be stopped twice. The NOS reports that police officers even drew their weapons, but no shots were fired. Three people have been arrested.
Social media
Just like earlier this weekend, young people seem to have heeded a call on social media to riot on Sunday evening. In Roermond and Stein, where an emergency order has been in force since Saturday evening, five people have been arrested on the basis of the emergency ordinance that has been in force in both Limburg municipalities since Saturday evening. They were arrested for possession of narcotics, failure to show identification and insult, the police said.
In Groningen, Mayor Koen Schuiling also issued an emergency order at 10 o’clock in the evening, for the center and the surrounding area. The ME tried to ‘wipe out’ the city center on Sunday evening after groups of people committed destruction there, a police spokesperson told ANP news agency. The violence stemmed from an otherwise peaceful corona demonstration in the city.
The police also acted in the Brabant cities of Roosendaal and Tilburg on Sunday evening. Fifteen people were arrested in Roosendaal, the municipality reported at the end of the evening. An elementary school was set on fire, presumably by a fireworks bomb. The school will remain closed on Monday.
