Restaurant Owner Shares Encounter with Tricky Dutch Students: A Warning for Other Prague Establishments

The restaurateur Ivo S. turned to the server PrahaIN.cz. He has, as he says, a pub in the center of Prague. It focuses exclusively on foreign clientele. He gives employees a higher salary so that they don’t leave him. He rates business as very good.

However, the reason for our conversation was not his prosperity, but rather a trick that Ivo has encountered twice in recent weeks. At the same time, he is very sophisticated and at the same time unassailable.

It was demonstratively practiced by a group of Dutch students from the ERASMUS program who came to Prague in exchange for their colleagues from CTU.

“The boys came to have a beer. They were guys in their twenties. They took five in total. The cost could have been around five hundred,” said Ivo S. for PrahaIN.cz. There was a problem during payment. The science-oriented students dumped the corresponding number of coins on the table, in addition to Czech crowns.

And the loud countdown began.

“I was there because the waiters were mad at them that they would count for an hour and in the meantime someone would slip,” the owner of the restaurant further describes. “It wasn’t until the evening that I realized they did it on purpose. When they were around three hundred, they said they had made a mistake and started counting again, I ran out of patience and told them to leave it and go. I also said ‘see you’. They probably interpreted it to mean that they should come again, which really happened to my dismay, only there were so many of them once and there were guys from the Czech Republic among them,” the businessman further told PrahaIN.cz.

They tried to repeat the trick.

We constantly focus on restaurants in Prague. Often these are stories from readers, other times we set out on our own. We went to the center in August, when…

Fun, admitted the students

Coincidentally, one of the students was the son of an employee of the PrahaIN.cz server. We contacted him and he confirmed the whole thing to us. They say it was a joke. “They usually don’t have anything to return, we did it in Holland several times and it always worked, so we tried it in Prague and it worked for us too,” said Petr Č. from CTU.

Although the students had fun, the restaurant owner did not. “We won’t let them in here anymore, I know what they look like,” he concluded.

Our editors asked about the same situation elsewhere. “No, we have not encountered this,” revealed the staff of the Old Town restaurant and the Bílý kőň restaurant. At Orloj, the situation was different. “Young people tried it on us with pennies, they wanted to pay in change, but they didn’t have a lot of spending, we also let them go, they had it in a bag,” added the man, who introduced himself on the phone as Petr.

As the press department of the CNB explained to us, everyone is obliged to accept domestic banknotes and coins without restrictions. He can only refuse if the currency is significantly damaged or if more than fifty pieces of coins are used in one payment.

Apparently they didn’t know that at the above restaurants.
