The “Restaurant of Mistaken Orders” has gained fame beyond the borders of Japan. The goal is to bring people with dementia into contact with other people.

On the website of the restaurant “Restaurant of Mistaken Orders” a guest is quoted as saying: “Everything tasted very good, so I didn’t care what I got.”

Unusual idea with a social background

But how did this unusual idea come about? Shiro Oguni, who founded the restaurant, observed elderly people in a nursing home suffering from loneliness, which contributed to the development of dementia. In Japan, one in five pensioners already suffers from this. Communication with other people is undoubtedly beneficial as it stimulates the brain and inhibits the progression of dementia.

Japan has the oldest society among industrialized nations due to declining birth rates and a lack of immigration. The aim of founding the restaurant was to bring affected people back into contact with other people and at the same time create more understanding among the population.

A game of chance with humor

A little gamble: the serving staff gets it wrong in 37 percent of orders. This often causes laughter, both among the guests and the waiters.

Despite mistakes: large crowds in the ‘Restaurant of Mistaken Orders’

Of course, this may not be ideal for picky eaters, but the “Restaurant of Mistaken Orders” can’t complain about a lack of guests. Because it is not only extremely well-known in Japan, it has also attracted a lot of attention internationally.
