Jil Teichmann successfully entered the WTA tournament in Lexington, Kentucky. The left-hander won 6-2 7-5 against Russian qualifier Anna Kalinskaya (WTA 114).
After easily winning the first, Jil Teichmann experienced some scares in the second. The 63rd in the world led 3-0 before conceding the next five games. But Teichmann recovered to pocket the win of the match.
In the second round, Teichmann will find himself opposed to the winner of the match between Australian Ajla Tomljanovic (WTA 56) or Kazakh Yulia Puntintseva (WTA 33).
In the first meeting of the day, Serena Williams (WTA 9) had to go to the three-set limit to beat Bernarda Pera (WTA 60) 4-6 6-4 6-1.
Dominated in the first set, Williams dismissed 4 break points at 4-4 in the second set to return to the match before flying over the debates. Serena Williams, who played her first game there since a Fed Cup meeting in early February against Latvian Anastasia Sevastova, will meet her sister Venus (WTA 67) or Belarussian Victoria Azarenka (WTA 58) in the next round.
