In the meantime, an investigation is still underway into exactly how the salmonella contamination could have happened. “It’s important to us that we can restart as soon as possible, but we don’t want to compromise the analysis of where things really went wrong,” said Warlop. “Barry Callebaut found the bacterium himself. It is such an exceptional source of infection that it is very strange for us that this contamination could have happened.”
“We can only start when that analysis has been completed in full. The cause will also provide a lot of clarity about who bears which responsibility.” The factory therefore does not want to attach an exact timing to the restart. “We also need the green light from the Food Agency. Once we have that, we will do everything we can to start up as soon as possible.”
