Apologies slavery | No reason to celebrate, there are still abuses ‘Cabinet opens door for apologies after advice‘ (AD 2-7). I have finally been able to understand why Keti Koti resents me. Not that I approve of the behavior of our close ancestors. I am disgusted by the way in which they destroyed the lives of many out of sheer greed. No, my resistance stems from the feeling that we have no right to speak, as long as we still allow slavery to continue here and now. Look at how we deal with migrant workers. Or how the stadiums are being built in Qatar for the World Cup. We bet that we will only object to this if the Dutch national team has not been able to qualify?
Willem de Jong, Hellevoetsluis.

Apologies slavery 2. | Apologies do not solve racism and discriminationdiscriminatie As a left-wing rascal, I am hopeless now, but I have trouble making excuses for ‘our’ slavery past. This is not a time to be proud of. But does this solve discrimination and racism? And should the Italian government now also be held accountable for the widespread use of slaves during the Roman Empire, or the Dutch government for allowing child labor into the twentieth century?
K. de Vries, Rijswijk.

Apologies slavery 3. | Make a National Day of Action or Remembrance I think it would be a good plan to make 1 July a national holiday. But I have the feeling that there is still very little to celebrate. Because slavery, oppression and abuse are far from being eradicated. Examples include trafficking in women, child labor or, for example, the Uyghurs and Tibetans. In the same breath we can mention the many millions of animals in stables and slaughterhouses that are needlessly tortured. Recently, images were again shown of cows and pigs being beaten and mistreated with an electric shock weapon. This is what I call abnormal behaviour. We thought that these kinds of abuses had now largely been addressed and would belong to the past. But no, it still happens and continues to happen. Poor people, poor animals. That is why I am thinking more of a National Day of Remembrance or National Day of Action to put an end to these kinds of atrocities and injustices for once. This is not how you should treat people, but neither should you treat animals.
Paula van Roon, Heerlen.

PVV | Smear against Kaag is slowly becoming sickly ‘GroenLinks runs away from debate after PVV attack on Kaag‘ (AD 2-7). In a debate on Thursday, the PVV managed to say about Minister Kaag that she ‘very much likes having terrorists around her’. The smear campaign of the PVV, led by Wilders, against Kaag is beginning to take on sickening proportions. This way you don’t have to communicate with each other in the room. Where is the exemplary function? Some protested, including the chairman who did not intervene. Corinne Ellemeet of GroenLinksgoed standpoint and a prima drew her conclusions and no longer wished to participate in this debate. A great move to show that this is not possible. Kind of bad that she was the only one, the rest stayed put. The PVV thinks she has scored well again. What you shouldn’t do to attract voters, which they fail to do well, by the way. I hope it stays that way. In this way you do not belong in a parliament.
Apologies slavery 4. | It’s hard to apologize if you weren’t there Why does the current generation have to apologize for facts from the distant past? You can regret that these events happened, but that’s all. We weren’t even there! Apologize to those who were involved, not the current generation, who can’t change it anyway. So: in any case, absolutely no apologies on my behalf.
J. Nordhausen, Pijnacker.

Energy bill | The bill gets very high for the best boy ‘Energy bill rises sharply‘ (AD 1-7). Shame that electricity prices are going to rise by as much as 25 percent. When it is too hot, the electricity companies cannot store the excess electricity produced by the solar panels for private individuals. When it is too cold they cannot produce enough because of the proliferation of water pumps, electric cars and so on. So we’re going to let citizens pay for it again and raise the prices of electricity sharply. We should never have gotten rid of clean gas. In this respect, our neighboring countries are doing better. They switch from oil to gas. The Netherlands would like to be the best-behaved boy in the class, with the result that citizens are once again in serious financial trouble.
Nanny Barthen, The Hague.
