Responses to the apologies for the slavery past: ‘Ask apologies to those involved’ | Opinion

Apologies slavery | No reason to celebrate, there are still abuses
Cabinet opens door for apologies after advice‘ (AD 2-7). I have finally been able to understand why Keti Koti resents me. Not that I approve of the behavior of our close ancestors. I am disgusted by the way in which they destroyed the lives of many out of sheer greed. No, my resistance stems from the feeling that we have no right to speak, as long as we still allow slavery to continue here and now. Look at how we deal with migrant workers. Or how the stadiums are being built in Qatar for the World Cup. We bet that we will only object to this if the Dutch national team has not been able to qualify?

Willem de Jong, Hellevoetsluis.

Apologies slavery 2. | Apologies do not solve racism and discriminationdiscriminatie
As a left-wing rascal, I am hopeless now, but I have trouble making excuses for ‘our’ slavery past. This is not a time to be proud of. But does this solve discrimination and racism? And should the Italian government now also be held accountable for the widespread use of slaves during the Roman Empire, or the Dutch government for allowing child labor into the twentieth century?

K. de Vries, Rijswijk.
