Two world records were set during an athletics meet in Valencia, Spain on Wednesday night. In advance, the organizers had already stamped the event as “World Record Day” – and two of the participants did not disappoint.
Joshua Cheptegei from Uganda ran in to 26.11.00 in the 10,000 meters, and at the same time broke the record of Kenenisa Bekele in 26.17.53 set in Brussels in 2005 by over six seconds.
A little earlier in the evening, Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey ran in to 14.06.62 and a world record of 5000 meters for women. She erased the 12-year-old world record of Tirunesh Dibaba by almost five seconds.
Dibaba currently recorded 14.11,15 at Bislett in 2008. Gidey thus broke the latest record, which means that Bislett Stadium has no official world records left.
The main characters of course cheered on the super times, but not everyone does – because of the way it was done.
– On the verge of cheating
Aftonbladet commentator Mats Wennerholm is among those who react. He has written a comment titled: “On the verge of cheating”.
“This was not athletics. It was a commissioned job “, Wennerholm believes.
– How much help should you get? he asks.
He points out that “human super hares” were used, a light hare and that the duo used the much talked about Nike shoes Dragonfly, which has created debate in the athletics circus.
Wennerholm reacts in particular to the use of light hairs, light on the side of the running track that went as fast as the old world record – a technology Therese Johaug, among other things, used during the Impossible Games. He writes:
“No, forbid the shit. I will not see this again. “
– Must be discussed
NRK’s Jann Post commented on the two records for the state channel on Wednesday.
– It was incredibly good running. It was not surprising that Cheptegei, after the level he showed at 5000 meters, managed it. There is a formula that allows you to walk the time of 5000 meters with two and plus in one minute, and that was about what happened here, says Post to Dagbladet and continues:
– It was more surprising that Gidey ran so fast. She has been goal-oriented for a long time, and had only one goal in mind. I was unsure how it was going to go, she convinced a lot.
Post reacts as follows to Wennerholm’s attack on the use of light rabbits in record runs:
– I think that this with the light is something you have to discuss. I have no doubt that it is a very big help in this type of record attempt, to set up optimal speed. Here the hares can not miss, so you get optimal running arrangements. This makes it easier to break existing records, says Post.
He points out that it was more unpredictable before, where you were excited about the lap times and the 1000 meter passes along the way, to be able to compare with old records.
– Here you always know how the development is. At the same time, the world is moving forward. We have gone from running on gravel, to tartan deck and on to mondo deck. The world is constantly changing. It’s cool that it runs faster than ever as well. I am a bit for and against that, I have not decided, says Post.

– Not for much help
Cheptegei thus used the Nike shoes Dragonfly. This and similar types of shoes have long been controversial, and many believe their use is considered “technical doping”, because practitioners get an advantage. The shoes contain, among other things, a special foam, as well as a carbon fiber sole.
In February, the International Athletics Federation (World Athletics) introduced restrictions on shoes of this type in championships, after strong accusations that it gave athletes a competitive advantage to wear them. This has not stopped the development of new models that are within the regulations.
“Super shoes distort the real ability of elite athletes”, writes English The Telegraph, which cites a researcher in the field.
– When it comes to shoes, I do not think those studded shoes are as great help as people think. There are no shoes that give more energy back, you lose energy. When you get more energy than you create yourself, then it becomes problematic. I think these shoes are more gentle, you can withstand running longer in them. You can use them more often in training, which is an advantage, says Post.
Cheptegei had, among other things, hares in 5000 meters, before he ran the last 5000 meters alone. Jann Post points out that hares have been used at all times in athletics.
– If you are going to put a hold on how good the hare can be, I think it is difficult in men’s races, Post thinks.
