Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV): Symptoms, Complications, and Prevention

The RS, respiratory syncytial virus, is a common cold virus and is the most common cause of (severe) respiratory infections in babies and children under four years of age. Young babies in particular can become short of breath due to inflammation of the small airways or pneumonia. An infection is also dangerous for children with Down Syndrome, children with heart defects or premature babies. For adults it often remains a simple cold. Infection occurs by spreading virus particles in the air, for example by coughing. The risk of contamination is especially high in areas where many people come together.
