Respect for core values / Day

Formally to the Saeima in the form of a video conference, but in fact to the entire people of Latvia, for whose support the President of Ukraine had many words of gratitude to say. And we can be proud, even if we were among the first to deliver weapons to Ukraine the day before the war, we are second only to Estonia in terms of military aid in terms of gross domestic product, and we have provided support to Ukrainian refugees seemingly without grumbling. .

At the moment, however, it seems that our forces alone, ie those of NATO and EU countries that border Russia and have the best understanding of the consequences of allowing an overt or covert Russian victory in Ukraine, will not be enough. There is a heated debate in Western elites as to whether it is not time to impose a ceasefire on Ukraine, to make it donate its territories and its freedom to choose its future, only to appease the beast and save the normal standard of living of Europeans. These considerations also appear to be at the root of the slow supply of heavy weapons, which could force Ukraine to retreat to the administrative border of the Luhansk region in the near future. How does President Zelensky, who devoted the most important part of his address to the Saeima, evaluate this judgment of the West, especially Germany, France and Italy? As usual, harshly and accurately, without blowing diplomatic fog: “They are looking for an opportunity and are only able to think about income, interest and bank statements. “Some people think that not all nations matter. They also think that a nation can simply be forgotten.”

According to Zelensky, it is time to restore respect for fundamental values in the world. Which, in fact, includes respect for both the nation and the country, and the individual. And in this context, despite Zelensky’s words of praise for Latvia, as well as the self-glorification of our leading politicians, unpleasant questions must also be asked. Why did the Latvian government delay the growing problem of continuing assistance to Ukrainian refugees until the last moment, waking up only when the local government and refugee organizations raised the brawl? If politicians publicly admit that there has been a delay in the civil service because “Latvians themselves do not have such support”, what is the misunderstanding of “justice” !? And what about the prime minister, who, for the second time at a critical juncture – as in the Covid crisis – seems to have done everything in his power not to take personal responsibility but to rely on “horizontal co-operation” between ministries?
