Resolution of South China Sea Issues Must Be Legal

WASHINGTON – US Secretary of State (US), Mike Pompeo said, Washington supports the establishment of ASEAN on the South China Sea. Pompeo said China could not treat the South China Sea as its maritime empire.

Through his Twitter account, as reported by Sputnik on Sunday (6/28/2020), Pompeo said the resolution of the South China Sea issue must be in accordance with international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea or UNCLOS.

“The US welcomes the urging of ASEAN leaders that the South China Sea dispute must be resolved in accordance with international law, including UNCLOS. China cannot be treated to treat the South China Sea as its maritime empire. We will soon talk about this topic,” Pompeo said.

After the ASEAN Summit which was held virtually in the middle, the ASEAN leaders issued a joint statement expressing concern over the situation in the South China Sea.

“The importance of maintaining and promoting peace, security, stability, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation over the South China Sea, as well as upholding international law, including UNCLOS 1982, in the South China Sea,” read the statement of ASEAN leaders.

The majority of the islands in the South China Sea are controlled by Beijing, but the area is also claimed by several other countries, including Vietnam, Cambodia, Brunei and the Philippines, all of whom are ASEAN members.
