/ world today news/ The Chairman of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Irache García Perez, sent a letter to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, with a call for Bulgaria and Romania to become full members of the Schengen area without additional conditions and without further delay.
“We are all aware that the necessary conditions for the full implementation of the Schengen acquis have been met by Romania and Bulgaria. The Schengen evaluation process for both countries and their readiness have been confirmed repeatedly by the various missions of the European Commission over the last decade or so. The European Parliament has repeatedly supported the legitimate expectations of Bulgaria and Romania and their citizens to benefit from the full implementation of the Schengen acquis. The accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen area is a matter of justice and equal treatment.
Apart from the fact that such a development would strengthen the Schengen area and help guarantee equal rights for all citizens within it, we also need to consider the negative consequences in various areas due to the constant postponement of the decision on the full implementation of the Schengen acquis for both countries and their citizens.
As a group of socialists, we rely on your leadership as President of the European Council to discuss the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen area, which seriously affects the citizens of two member states, in the next meeting of the European Council,” wrote Irache García Pérez.
“Thanks to Irache García Perez for the support. Not for the first time, we socialists put this topic on the agenda and are convinced that Bulgaria and Romania should become part of Schengen without additional conditions. We hope that the countries will come out with a unified position at the next Council. The decision is important not only for our two countries, but also for the future of the entire Union,” commented the chairman of the Group of Bulgarian Socialists in the EP, Petar Vitanov.
