Encouraging labor migration is meeting resistance in several EU countries. The Netherlands and Austria have previously opposed less far-reaching Commission plans for legal migration, and Hungary and Poland are also averse to Brussels interference in this area.
Migration and asylum policy are an important theme in large parts of Europe. In the Netherlands, the government fell last summer over asylum policy. In a number of EU countries, immigration is leading to a growing popularity of the extreme right.
For example, there were recent election successes by Vox in Spain, the Sweden Democrats in Sweden and Marine Le Pen’s Rassemblement National in France, all parties that are fiercely involved in the asylum debate. Moreover, Italy and Hungary, with Giorgia Meloni and Viktor Orbán, both have a prime minister who is very critical of the number of migrants coming to Europe.
