History and memory, democracy and freedom. Never more than in the days of the attack on freedom of speech, in the aftermath of Scurati case, there is a need to hear these words resonate loudly. Again and again. The opportunity is provided to us, for the second year in Rome, in the places of the city where the partisans fought eighty years ago against Nazi-fascism, the Resistance Festival.
To the founding values of ours Republicwhich have animated thousands of men and women between 1943 and 1945 laying the foundations for the drafting of the Constitution, in fact, the three days are inspired from 23 to 25 April of lessons, meetings, round tables but also theater shows and film screenings, concerts and exhibitions, with free entry, organized by the Department of Culture of Rome Capital in various places – from the Travertino Arch to Villa Lazzaroni, from the Casa della Cultura of Villa De Sanctis to many others – not to forget that page of history.
Historians, scholars, journalists, artists will then take turns to tell the public about one of the highest moments in the history of Italy and start from there to discuss those values, first and foremost democracy, which we see put at risk on several occasions.
It begins on April 23rd with a rich program, curated by historians Davide Conti and Michela Ponzani. Starting from the lesson of Ezio Mauro (at 5pm, at the Travertino Arch – Piazza Coperta) on “The fall of fascism” which takes its cue from his latest book published by Feltrinelli, in fact The fall. Chronicles of the end of fascism, and from the theater show of the same name which stages in eight scenes those crucial months of 1943, which mark the end of Benito Mussolini’s dictatorship.
It is dedicated instead to Italo Calvino one of the round tables of the first day to take note of and that is “Resistance and literature. Winners and losers in The Path of the Spider’s Nest” with Marco Belpoliti (Travertino Arch – Villa Pagoda, 12.15 pm). While on the centenary of the assassination, 10 June 1924, the round table “Giacomo Matteotti a century later” con Old concept pays homage to the great politician and anti-fascist (Arco di Travertino – Villa Pagoda, 4pm).
And, again, the spotlight was on on April 24th on “The women of the Resistance”, in the lesson of Benedetta Tobagi that in the book with which she won the Campiello 2023, Women’s Resistance (Einaudi), has given voice and face back, starting from the photographs collected in dozens of archives, to the women protagonists of the Resistance who have too often been passed over in silence (Arco di Travertino – Piazza Coperta, 4 pm).
While, again on April 24th, Umberto Gentiloni brings attention to Rome bombed (Travertino Arch – Piazza Coperta, 7pm). Grand finale on Thursday 25 April, again at the Piazza Coperta dell’Arco di Travertino, with the lesson of Alessandro Barbero on Via Rasella (4pm) e Corrado Augias who, in dialogue with Michela Ponzani (from 7.15pm), with her unmistakable style retraces the stages of liberation of Rome.
