A senior GSOC investigator, who was involved in highly sensitive investigations into An Garda Síochána, has resigned following claims that he attended a party celebrating the acquittal of Gerry “The Monk” Hutch. The Garda Ombudsman did not inform the police of the investigator’s resignation until after the story had already broken in the media. An analysis is underway of all investigations he carried out into officers and all the information he accessed to determine whether anything unusual occurred. The investigator’s attendance at the party is not a criminal matter, but an assessment is necessary to determine whether there is a conflict of interest or a more serious issue that needs investigation. General Secretary of the Associations of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors, Antoinette Cunningham, has called for an external investigation to be carried out into GSOC.
