The married Hancock had to leave the field because leaked camera images showed him kissing an employee. He did not adhere to the corona guidelines of the government, which had prescribed people to keep distance from people who do not belong to their household.
Weak spot
In addition to the affair, the presence of a camera in the ministerial office also caused a lot of discussion. Attorney General Robert Buckland told Sky News this week that many colleagues are now doubting whether such devices are present in their offices.
The Evening Standard writes that the camera in Hancock’s office was actually intended to monitor a glass door and balcony. That would have been a security flaw. The kissing Hancock, however, stood at another door.
An internal investigation must show whether the camera was accidentally turned during a renovation or whether it was intentional. Sources tell the newspaper that the latter scenario is assumed. “We all think Matt Hancock was framed here.”
Apologies not enough
Hancock’s ministry declined to comment substantively. The department did confirm that security procedures are being reviewed. The newspaper writes that the camera images did not go to the police or government employees, but to a private company.
Hancock had made another unsuccessful attempt to keep his job. He apologized, but that proved insufficient. At least 80 MPs from his Conservative Party are said to have pushed for his departure. There was also great indignation among citizens.
The successor to Hancock probably does not have to fear such leaks. The new minister Sajid Javid said the camera has since been turned off.
