Resignations of Bank of Lebanon’s Deputies and the Future of the Central Bank’s Governance

Sources accompanying the Bank of Lebanon’s governance file confirmed that the governor’s deputies will submit their resignations next Monday, headed by Deputy Governor Wassim Mansouri, driven by his political reference, but also the second and third deputies of the governor, who, according to the data, fear responsibility and prefer not to take responsibility.

Professor of Economics at the Lebanese University, Professor Jassem Ajaka, told the newspaper:home“The plan of the ruler’s deputies is the same as that of Deputy Prime Minister His Excellency Al-Shami, which is the plan of the International Monetary Fund, with an additional requirement that deals with the right to dispose of the compulsory reserve, that is, the money of depositors remaining in the Central Bank.”

Ajaka added, “The implementation of the plan is almost impossible, given that the plan imposes the implementation of deep reforms that cannot currently take place due to political differences,” stressing that “the abolition of a banking platform would be disastrous for Lebanon in the absence of any alternative that would allow controlling the exchange rate.”

Ministerial sources expected that the issue of the governance of the Banque du Liban would be presented during the government sessions that will discuss the draft budget for the year 2023, which will last for a whole week.

The sources said that it is expected that the extension will be presented to Riad Salameh in the central governorship until the election of a president.
