Resignation of Luis Rubiales as President of the Spanish Football Federation amidst Controversial Case

Luis Rubiales submitted his resignation as president of the Spanish Football Federation in light of the case related to his kissing player Jenny Hermoso after the 2023 Women’s World Cup final, but he continued to defend himself in the case that caused an uproar in the football world over the past 3 weeks.

Rubiales said in statements to the famous journalist Piers Morgan yesterday, Sunday, that he would resign after 5 years in the position, and the Spanish Federation announced in a brief statement issued today that Rubiales submitted his resignation in a letter to Pedrorocha, the interim president of the federation.

The Spanish Federation stated that Rubiales is also in the process of leaving the position of Vice President of the European Football Association (UEFA).

Rubiales faced a wave of sharp criticism because he kissed Jenny Hermoso, following the Spanish national team’s victory over its English counterpart in the Women’s World Cup final last month in Sydney.

Rubiales refused to resign during the Spanish Federation’s General Assembly meeting on the 25th of last month, and spoke of “false feminism” as well as being subjected to a “social assassination” operation.

Rubiales was temporarily suspended by a decision of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), and Hermoso filed a criminal complaint against him a few days ago.

Rubiales’ behavior was met with widespread condemnation in Spain and around the world, from athletes to politicians and the United Nations.

Jorge Velda was dismissed from coaching the Spanish women’s national team after all the members of the technical staff left, and a large number of players in Spain, including all the players from the team that won the World Cup title, said that they would not play again as long as Rubiales remained in the position of president of the federation.

Rubiales, whose mother went on a hunger strike for days to protest the way her son was treated, maintained his innocence until the end.

In a statement published on the “X” website – late yesterday evening, Sunday – Rubiales spoke of the presence of “forces that will prevent my return” and blamed an “inappropriate campaign” in addition to spreading lies.

He added, “I will defend my honor and innocence, and I have confidence in the future and in the truth.”

Sportnewspaper reported – today, Monday – that the statement issued by Rubiales “is further evidence that he lives in an unreal world.”
