Residents still without gas after pipe break

Little by little, service was restored to most of the affected residents. However, those we were able to talk to said that the fear they caused them was terrible.

“When we finally managed to get into the flat, there was a terrible smell of gas. My head hurts, my husband’s head hurts. The girl woke up looking dense today,” explained Grecia Solano.

Residents located at the intersection of Bedford Park Blvd and Decatur Avenue describe scenes of their experiences this Sunday morning, when from one moment to the next, they were left without gas service.

“Yes, we were here, we heard it! My sister-in-law lives across the street and she just passed by that same place. She was scared. Can you imagine if that had happened a moment earlier? Minute? She crossed and she comes here, she is here knocking on my door until I open it. That’s where the explosion happened! ” says Adria Almonte.

Con Ed spokesman Philip O’Brien said the smell of gas reported in the area was due to a broken valve in the street and residents of seven buildings were evacuated as a precaution.

He said that work has been going on at that place for a few weeks preparing the land for a new pipeline to replace the main line and more effectively to improve the infrastructure of the area.

However, residents confirm that the company has not provided them with details of this work and that no one has spoken to them directly to explain what happened:

“We don’t have the courage to change anything because nobody told us anything.” There is no legal information from any company to tell us what happened, or whether we can turn the stove on or not,” said Solano.

The Fire Department reported that five people were slightly injured, including Adria Almonte, who describes what she felt when she inhaled gas:

“I was unconscious for a couple of minutes. When I woke up, I saw that my glasses were in my sister-in-law’s hand and they fell off. Don’t know. I was unconscious for a couple of minutes. But it was like nausea, stomach discomfort,” he said.

In addition to residential buildings, the Bronx Botanical Garden was also affected, the exact causes of the pipe break are still under investigation.
