Surabaya, CNN Indonesia —
The Keputih Community, Sukolilo, Surabaya ask ambulance or hearses turn off sirens as they pass through the local village. The reason is that residents are restless and do not want their peace to be disturbed.
The area is indeed close to the Keputih Public Cemetery (TPU), where the bodies of Covid-19 patients have been buried for the past year and a half.
Local residents even put up a number of banners that read the prohibition of sounding ambulance sirens. They also asked the hearse driver not to be arrogant.
“You have entered the village area of Keputih Village. 1. Ambulance (hearing car) turn off the siren, 2. Don’t be arrogant in delivering the body. Don’t disturb the peace of our village,” read the banner posted at the place, when viewed CNNIndonesia.com, Thursday (15/7).
Not only that, in a video circulating on social media, local residents are also seen stopping an ambulance. They were seen shouting while surrounding the hearse.
“For corpse carriers when entering the Keputih area, the siren must be turned off,” said one resident in the video.
When confirmed, the Village Community Empowerment Institute (LPMK) Indi Nuroini said the banner was indeed installed by local residents a few days ago.
The warning banner, said Indi, was a reaction from Keputih Village residents who complained about the sound of ambulance sirens passing through their area.
“We installed it in response to the many Keputih residents who complained about the sound of hearse sirens entering our village road area,” said Indi.
In just one day, on average there are about 50 ambulances that pass through the village streets to the Keputih TPU, not to mention the accompanying family car. This makes local residents restless and haunted by fear.
“It all makes people in our village nervous, so we agreed to make such an appeal so that we remain polite on the road,” he said.
Indi said that currently the majority of ambulances that pass by are no longer turning on the sirens. According to him, village roads are much more orderly than before.
Keputih Lurah, Itaqwati Oetomo, said that his party also received reports from local residents who complained about the sound of ambulance sirens. According to him, residents are restless.
Especially the residents who live right on the road to the Keputih TPU. In a day, people even hear tens or even hundreds of ambulance sirens passing by.
“Because it’s close to the Keputih TPU. It can be 100 a day. There are also nights,” said Ita.
Ita also admitted that he had written to the Social Service of the Surabaya City Government. Through the letter, he conveyed complaints and facilitated residents’ requests.
“Already sent a letter. Already in touch via WhatsApp too. Everything is clear,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Sukolilo Sector Police, Kompol Subiyantana explained that the billboard was an effort on his part to facilitate the residents. It is also to avoid potential rejection.
“We have written to the Social Service as well. We facilitate and bridge the aspirations of the residents,” he said.
