Residents of the Bronx River Addition complex NYCHA Public Housing, will have the opportunity to vote on the future of their buildings, amid a 30-day voting period beginning March 13, for the expansion of the site where 146 people and 133 homes live. Tenants will decide whether to enter the Public Housing Preservation Trust, the Permanent Affordability Commitment Together Program, or remain in Section 9 housing.

The Bronx River Addition complexcurrently has an estimated capital need of $66 million over 20 years, and according to the City, has faced several serious infrastructure issues in recent years, which have caused tenants to be relocated to one of its two buildings.
Norma Saunders, president of the Bronx River and Bronx River Addition Residents Association, was optimistic about the process of tenant participation in decision-making and assured that “It is a new day” for that complex where older adults live.

“We have had our share of challenges, but ultimately, not only are we receiving the care we need and deserve, but the ability to choose the path forward for our homes is in our hands. Residents will be the ones to guide the future of the Bronx River Addition.”

The first two options – entering the development into the Public Housing Preservation Fund or joining the Permanent Affordability Commitment Together (PACT) program – would unlock alternative federal funding streams for needed repairs to deteriorating apartments. The third option is to continue with the traditional public housing financing model, maintaining Section 9 housing, which does not allow NYCHA to access other funding sources, such as Section 8 funds.

Voting will take place between March 13 and April 11, 2024, and can be done online or by mail, or in person during the last 10 days of the voting period.
