Residents in Moerdijk have been bothered by stench since this afternoon. Several people called emergency services because they became nauseous and had headaches. According to the security region, the cause is a leaking well in the port. It will be closed tonight.
A spokesperson for the Central and West Brabant Security Region says to: Broadcasting Brabant that around 2 p.m. the first report of odor nuisance came in. Concerned calls to the emergency number kept coming in throughout the afternoon, especially from the Moerdijk harbor region.
A special measurement team from the fire brigade has conducted an investigation in the port. They visited ships and companies. In the end, a leaking well turned out to be the source of the stench. It is still unclear what kind of substance or gas is leaking from the well.
The stench will in any case linger for a long time, according to the spokesman. “People don’t have to worry about side effects, but the bad air doesn’t just disappear.” The security region does advise to keep windows and doors closed.
The spokesperson also says that people should not be afraid if they do not feel well. “It’s annoying, of course, but it’s not harmful to health.”
