A number of residents in the city of Jayapura, Papua rushed to flee afterward earthquake magnitude (M) 5.2 occurred on the northern coast of Jayapura. Residents fled as they feared a tsunami would occur after the earthquake Jayapura.
“So they live on the waterfront, seeing the water recede makes them think there will be a tsunami and the frequent aftershocks make them choose to flee,” said Jayapura City BPBD chief Asep Khalid, as reported by Antara. detikSulselTuesday (3/1/2023).
Asep admitted that he cannot force residents to return to their homes. But she asked residents not to panic.
“We convey that the phenomenon of the receding water is not that there will be a tsunami, but at night like this the water is receding. So we don’t have to worry too much,” he explained.
The displaced are those living in Dok VII and Dok VIII, North Jayapura district. They chose to seek refuge in the Papua Province Office of Education and Papua Province Employment Camp.
The sea water on the coast of Jayapura is known to have receded after the M 5.2 earthquake which was centered in the sea. In the circulating video, you can see the atmosphere of Holtekamp Beach at night.
