Residents of Granada are fleeing the streets due to new earthquakes

GRANADA – On Tuesday evening, residents of different parts of Granada once again had to deal with six larger earthquakes with forces ranging from 2.7 to 4.3 on the Richter scale. Residents of the province of Granada are shocked after last weekend’s earthquake caused extensive damage, several injuries and disturbing video images on social media. Despite the curfew, many residents ‘flee’ the streets on Tuesday evening for fear of damage or worse in their homes.

It rumbles quite a bit in the province Granada where more than 172 earthquakes of various forces have been measured since last Saturday. Last Saturday, the strongest earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale was registered at the epicenter of Santa Fe, about 14 km from the city of Granada. That earthquake caused panic among many residents and damage and injuries like us were reported HERE already wrote.

Before the earthquake from 4.4 on Saturday, dozens of smaller earthquakes had already occurred and after Saturday it has continued to tremble in the province. In most cases these are light earthquakes that do not exceed 2 on the Richter scale, with a few peaks.

That also happened on Tuesday evening when two more severe earthquakes were recorded in just 15 minutes with forces of 4.2 and 4.3 on the Richter scale.

Earthquakes were recorded at a depth of three miles in Santa Fe with a magnitude of 4.2 at 10:54 p.m., one at 3.5 at 11:00 p.m., one at 3.3 at 10:57 p.m. and one at one kilometer depth in Atarfe of 2.7 at 10:40 p.m. . Another earthquake of 4.2 was recorded with the epicenter Cullar Vega at 10:44 pm. Except in the province of Granada, these earthquakes have also been felt in the provinces of Córdoba, Málaga and Jaén.

Due to the ongoing and in some cases more severe earthquakes, many people decided to leave the homes and, despite the curfew, seek safety from the streets. Meanwhile, the authorities are calling for calm and not to panic.

According to the Spanish Geographic Institute (IGN), more than 400 earthquakes and tremors have been recorded northwest of the city of Granada since December 1, 2020. Mainly in and around the municipalities of Santa Fe, Atarfe, Cullar Vega and Pinos Puente.

Pre-alarm phase

In Granada is de ‘pre-emergencya pre-alarm phase due to the seismic movements in the province of Granada. The regional government is concerned about the enormous amount of tremors and earthquakes that have caused damage in some places but even more panic among the residents of the area.

For years, with warns that there could be just as strong an earthquake (terremoto) as in the year 1884 in Arenas del Rey (Granada). Then 900 people were killed and more than 2,000 injured in a quake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale. In 1829 a quake of 6.9 on the Richter scale took place in Torrevieja (Alicante), resulting in 400 deaths.

According to scholars, there is a major earthquake in Spain every 70 years, so this could happen in the near future. The most recent major quake took place on May 11, 2011 in Lorca (Murcia), causing a great deal of material damage and even killed 9 and injured more than 300.
