A group of immigrants who were taken to the new shelter set up in the town of Arrochar on Staten Island were received in a hostile manner by the residents of the area.
For several days some inhabitants of this area have been against the opening of a refuge for immigrants in the Saint John Villa Academy.
This new space will welcome women and families.
Today at the stroke of noon the first trucks began to arrive.
When they got off the buses, the residents who were protesting some 100 meters from the place, which was protected with metal fences, yelled at them that they were not wanted there.
“Go back to your house, you are not welcome here,” they shouted.
Yesterday, three people were arrested in this same place for removing the metal barriers during a protest.
Neighbors assured that the arrival of immigrants will bring them insecurity.
“We understand that the community has to be helped, but this is not the place, there is a school here, this is a very vulnerable community, we are old and now we cannot even walk in our community,” explained one of the neighbors.
The city estimated that people are arriving at a rate of about 600 a day, which has made it difficult to shelter them.
