The Minister of Religion (Menag) Yaqut Cholil Qoumas said that there had been clarification regarding the excitement statue Our Lady is covered with a tarpaulin in Kulon Progo, DIY. Yaqut said statue Our Lady was closed by the owner.
“It has been clarified about the statue of the Virgin Mary covering the owner,” Yaqut told reporters at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Friday (24/3/2023).
He explained, closure statue Our Lady was carried out because there was a procedure that was not followed. Yaqut reiterated that the closure was not carried out by residents.
“Yes, it was closed because the establishment did not go through a procedure, the process that had to be followed was taken consciously after conducting deliberations which had their own closing so they were not residents,” said Yaqut.
Furthermore, Yaqut conveyed an appeal for every citizen to respect each other. He reminded about the importance of awareness of social life.
“Yes, everyone respects each other, the best thing is to live in mutual respect. Realize that we all have rights and our rights are limited by the rights of others,” said Yaqut.

Previously, a video went viral on social media showing the statue of the Virgin Mary covered with a tarpaulin in Kulon Progo Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY). This led to a request by the police because it was wrong to narrate that the closure was done because there was pressure from mass organizations.
“We apologize for our members who were wrong in writing the narrative and we have received orders from the Regional Police Chief (DIY) that there are no mass organizations that disturb security and peace. If there are mass organizations that disturb security, comfort, peace, especially in the Kulon Progo area, we will take action. ,” said the Kulon Progo Police Chief AKBP Muharomah Fajarini, at a press conference at the Kulon Progo Police Headquarters, reported detikJatengThursday (23/3).
It is known that the narration in the viral video is narrated that the closing of the statue was due to pressure from mass organizations. The Lendah Police in their narration explained that there were mass organizations who felt that the presence of the statue could disturb the solemnity of Muslims who were observing the fasting month of Ramadan.
Fajarini clarified that the closure was an initiative of the prayer house owner because the permits were in the process of being managed and the building that was just being built in December 2022 was still in the process of being finalized.
“Therefore, the owner who happens to be domiciled in Jakarta told his younger sibling (manager of the prayer house) temporarily at the prayer house because there is a statue of the Virgin Mary, temporarily covered using a tarpaulin. The initiative to cover the statue with the tarpaulin is purely from the owner of the house prayer. And the one who did the closing was from the family represented by his siblings,” he explained.
It is known, the statue of the Virgin Mary is located in the Sasana Adhi Rasa Prayer House ST Yacobus, Degolan Hamlet, Bumirejo Village, Kapanewon Lendah, Kulon Progo. The 6 meter high statue is covered with a blue tarpaulin.
