After long quarrels about parking for residents in Josefstadt, the first new additional boards were installed on Monday. This means that the exceptions for suppliers and social institutions also apply in the eighth district.

The parking situation in the eighth district is tense. The situation for residents was also exacerbated because the residents’ parking had not been valid for over two years: the district council refused to put up new boards with the addition “according to the Official Gazette of Vienna 41/2018” referring to the new rules.
Years of dispute
These came into force on December 1, 2018 and resulted in exemptions from neighboring parking. Since then, companies and social institutions have also been allowed to park their vehicles between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. This was agreed by the then Transport Councilor Maria Vassilakou (Greens) and the President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce Walter Ruck.
However, the first and eighth district resisted and did not put up the boards that would have had to be paid for from the district budget. The city then takes the legal opinion that the boards are invalid and that everyone in the districts is allowed to park in the neighboring area and not just those with a parking sticker.
Valid from assembly
While the district chairman in the inner city, Markus Figl (ÖVP), gave way in the previous year, Josefstadt had to wait for the change at the top of the district. The new district chairman Martin Fabisch said on Monday: “We see it as urgent to create parking space here especially for Josefstadt residents.”
“No parking” except for residents
After months of controversy, the right signs for residents’ parking have now also been installed in Josefstadt. Before that there were zones, but hardly anyone knew their way around and therefore many people parked where they weren’t allowed to.

MA 28 now wants to swap all necessary street signs for 700 parking spaces in the next two weeks. The rules apply from the moment the sign is installed. However, the head of MA 28, Thomas Keller, promises: “When the new boards are installed, the company will make a note of all the cars that are inside. So that they are not wrongly punished if they don’t know that the tablets have already been exchanged. “
