“Residential Mobilities in Rennes Métropole: Accommodation Preferences of Students, Workers, and Families”

Students, executives, workers, single-parent families… in what types of accommodation do they settle?

Nearly 40,000 households moved into accommodation in Rennes Métropole in 2018. Almost half were people living alone, mainly students, managers or intermediate professions under 40 and people over 40 living alone. A large majority of these newcomers have settled in Rennes; this proportion even reaching 85% for students. Conversely, 40% of couples with child(ren) whose head of family is an employee or worker settle in local centres.

The types of housing vary according to the profiles. Nearly one out of two newly settled households favored private rental. However, nearly one out of two single-parent families moved into low-rent housing, and nearly one out of two couples with children, whose head of family is a manager or an intermediate professional, became owner occupant . All profiles combined, local migration, within Rennes Métropole, remains the majority.
