Resident Parking in Cologne Set to Become More Expensive Starting 2024

Köln – Resident parking in Köln will be more expensive, the city announced this week. On January 1, 2024, Cologne residents will face significantly higher costs. Important for the new calculation: The vehicle length!

While the new fees have yet to be formally approved by the council, the city has already announced the changes effective January 1, 2024.

Previously, a parking ticket for residents cost 30 euros per year. However, this is about to change under the new rules. In the new year, Cologne residents will have to pay between 330 and 390 euros.

According to the city, the maximum rate of 390 euros applies to vehicles between 4.71 meters and 5.60 meters in length. If you own a vehicle with a length between 4.11 meters and 4.71 meters, you should pay 330 euros a year. Anyone who drives a larger car should no longer receive a resident’s license in the future.

People with a KölnPass or a handicapped pass are exempt from the high prices. You only have to pay between 90 and 120 euros per year.

According to Mayor Henriette Reker (66), the current fees are no longer up-to-date due to the scarcity of public space. Where residents would park for free, others would have to take a parking ticket. “So the new fee schedule is fairer on the one hand and serves our goal of protecting the scarce public spaces in the city of Cologne on the other,” says Reker.

The aim is to reduce the number of cars in Cologne. In the long term, this could create an incentive to rethink, adds Ascan Egerer, Alderman for Mobility. Perhaps this could help people who only use their cars sporadically to do without them altogether.
